By looking at the prevalence of a basket of medical conditions, we can make an initial judgement on which areas of the nation have populations that are the healthiest. A healthy population may arise from many factors of course, so it is not possible as yet to determine which factors are contributing to the inequality of health. Studies such as the Whitehall Study, are showing results that have been a surprise to many, though more thorough research is needed (and is in progress).
This map shows the result of combined rating of each PCT area for the prevalence of the conditions coronary heart disease, hypertension, cancers, diabetes, chronic pulmonary disease, mental illness, asthma, heart failure, depression, chronic kidney disease, epilepsy, TIA or stroke, and atrial fibrillation.
Health is affected by age, so this map could usefully also be judged against a map of the age distribution by region.
